James L. Meurell, 61, of Nanticoke died at home Saturday, May 17, 2025. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, the son of the late Carl S. and Nancy T. Conrad Meurell. James graduated from Hanover High School, class of 1981.
After graduation, James joined the U.S. Army Reserve, serving six years as an SPC vehicle mechanic assigned to the 104th Cavalry Regiment Field Combat Unit stationed in Egypt. He later enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s 109th Field Artillery, where he was a specialist as a mechanic in Service Battery 1-109 FA. After his active duty, James continued to work as an automotive service technician at various auto repair shops in Wyoming Valley.
During James' time in the military, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Multinational Force and Observers Medal.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survived by his siblings, sister Deborah Cefaly and her husband James, Stephens City, VA, brother C.J. Meurell and his wife Evelyn, El Dorado Hills, CA, brother Eric Meurell and his wife Stephanie, Palmetto, FL, nieces and nephews, James Patrick Cefaly, Jennifer Cefaly, Cassandra Williams and her husband Matthew and their sons Nicholas and Nathan, Alexandra Meurell, Benjamin Meurell and his wife Jessica, Justin Ryan Abueg and his wife Sandy, Daniel Meurell, and Jamie Meurell.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm on May 29, 2025, at the Nat Gawlas Jordan Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave. Wilkes-Barre. A visitation for family and friends will take place from 4:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral Home.
A private interment will be held at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
