George M. Daru Obituary

George M. Daru, 82, of Wilkes-Barre Township while at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township fell asleep in the Lord and entered into “Eternal Life”. He is now with “the love of his life”, his wife, Carol Ann Czajkowski Daru.


He was born in Wilkes-Barre Township, the son of the late George and Mary Popovich Daru. George was the valedictorian of his Class of 1961 from Wilkes-Barre Township High School. He was a 1965 graduate of Mansfield State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education and took many post graduate courses at various colleges.


George was a math and science teacher for many years for the Wilkes-Barre Township School District and the Wilkes-Barre Area School District, retiring in 1997.


George was a proud and dedicated citizen of the Wilkes-Barre Township Community. He proudly served as one of its councilmen and mayors.


He was a pillar and active member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Wilkes-Barre Township, where he served for 64 years as its cantor. He organized many fund raisers for the church and was an active member of St. John’s Guild.


George was an active member in many organizations and clubs, some of which included W-B AEA, where he formerly served as president, PSEA, NEA, PSER, Carpatho-Rusyns Society, Wyoming Valley Coin Club, and Agatha Christie Society.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carol Ann (Czajkowski) Daru in 2023 and by his brothers-in-law, George Czajkowski and his wife, Margaret, and Robert Czajkowski.


George is survived by his sisters, Mary Ann Zaledonis and her husband, Ronald, of Hanover Township and Nancy Wodarczyk and her husband, Richard, of Wilkes-Barre Township; and by his brother-in-law, Charles King and his wife, Marie and his sister-in-law, Vickie Czajkowski. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, David Wodarczyk, Christopher King and his wife, Elizabeth, Meredith Obert and her husband, Alex, Jonathan King and his wife, Meghan, George Czajkowski and his wife Kim, Jeoff Czajkowski and his wife, Linda, Amy Pascoe and her husband, Phil, and Robert Czajkowski and his wife, Sarah.


A celebration of George’s life will begin with a visitation on Sunday, September 7, 2025, from 6-8 pm and Monday, September 8, 2025, from 9-10 am at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 526 Church Street, Wilkes-Barre Township. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 am on Monday, September 8, 2025. Rev. Mykhaylo Prodanets will officiate. Cantors are Stephen Kozich and Denise Maslowski. Parastas Services will be held at 7 pm on Sunday. Those attending the visitation and service are asked to go directly to the Church.


Interment will be in St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Dallas.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 526 Church Street, Wilkes-Barre Township, PA 18702.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Nat Gawlas Jordan Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.
