Colonel Jessie W. Olshefski, age 96, formerly of Newport Street, Glen Lyon, passed away peacefully at Allied Hospice.
Born in Glen Lyon, Jessie was the daughter of the late Frank and Jessie (Olenginski) Olshefski. She was a proud graduate of Newport High School and dedicated her life to education, service, and the care of others. Jessie earned her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Wilkes-Barre, followed by a bachelor’s degree from Misericordia College and a master’s degree from the University of Scranton.
She was employed for many years at Retreat State Hospital, where she began her career as a nurse and later served as Supervisor of Vocational Adjustment Services. Jessie went on to continue her professional career at Danville State Hospital, where she remained until her retirement. Her work reflected her compassion, leadership, and commitment to improving the lives of those she served.
Jessie also had an impressive military career in the United States Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Colonel. Her military service was highlighted by deployment to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm where she led her team as Commanding Officer of the 300th Field Hospital, a testament to her courage, dedication and sense of duty
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Elczyna; her brother, Clemence Olshefski; and her niece, Diane Yudisky.
She is survived by her loving nieces, Susan Elczyna, Captain Holly Yudisky US Navy, and Cheryl Olshefski, who will forever cherish her memory and legacy of service.
The family would like to thank the staff of Plymouth Manor where she resided the last several years until her passing. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the hospice staff for their care and compassion.
Funeral Service with Military honors will be held Friday January 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. from Nat Gawlas Jordan Funeral Home 89 Park Ave. Wilkes-Barre, PA. Interment will be in St. Adalbert Cemetery, Glen Lyon.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
