Bernard J. Mengeringhausen, 85, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing in Wilkes-Barre, with his wife and family by his side.


He was born in Ashley, a son of the late Bernard E. and Agnes Farrell Mengeringhausen. Bernie was a 1959 graduate of St. Leo’s High School, Ashley, where he was a member of the State Championship Basketball Team as well as the Wilkes-Barre Business College and the American Institute of Banking. He served in the US Air Force. He was employed for many years in the banking industry, having served as vice president at Mellon Bank and PNC Bank in Wilkes-Barre. He also served as a Wilkes-Barre City Councilman, and as the Wilkes-Barre City Controller, prior to his retirement.


Bernie was a member of St. Nicholas-St. Mary Parish in Wilkes-Barre, where he served as chairman of the Finance Council. He was a member of the German-Austrian Union and a Gold Member of the St. Conrad’s Young Men’s Society. Bernie was a fourth- degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Wilkes-Barre Council 302 and the Alhambra Caravan # 4. He was very active and served as past president and current board member of the Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis Club and Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis Wheelchair Club. He was also an active member of the Wilkes-Barre Jaycees and JCI Senators, serving as past president and state officer. Bernie was a volunteer board member of the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts.


Bernie served on the Wilkes-Barre City Housing Authority, and he also served as chairman for the Wilkes-Barre Industrial Development Authority and Economic Development Corporation. He was a Luzerne County and Pennsylvania Sheriff’s Association member. Bernie served on the finance committee of the Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity and as the treasurer for Wilkes-Barre Catholic Social Services. Bernie was a board member of Salvation Army, the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, and board member and treasurer for Mercy Hospital. He also served on the King’s College President’s Council and as chairman for the Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Christopher Delen; granddaughter, Corinne Filograna; his sister, Patricia Buratti; brother, Joseph Mengeringhausen; and by brothers-in-law, Edward Buratti, Robert Nilon, and Richard Jones.


Bernie is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Susan Jones Mengeringhausen; and by his children, Dr. Kathleen M. Filograna, and her husband, Frank, Collegeville; James Mengeringhausen, Mesa, AZ; and Molly M. Delen, Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Christopher Delen and his wife, Jenna, Elena Filograna and fiancé Alex Clark, Jack Filograna, Sean Delen, and Anthony Delen; sister, Mary Ellen Nilon, Nanticoke. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Judy Mengeringhausen; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry Jones and his wife, Linda, Daniel Jones and his wife, Marilyn, Martha Duffy and her husband, Joseph, Elizabeth Samarin and her husband, William, and Nancy Belles and her husband Huck; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.


A celebration of Bernie’s life will begin with a visitation for family and friends on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 4-7 pm at the Nat Gawlas Jordan Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, and will continue on Friday with a visitation on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 9-10 am in St. Nicholas-St. Mary Parish, 226 S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 am. Those attending the service on Friday are asked to go directly to the Church. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

extra comfort provided by Serenity Hospice.
