Donald J. Houseknecht Obituary

Donald J. Houseknecht, 68, of Plains, passed away after an incredibly courageous yearlong battle with cancer on Thursday, November 30th, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Luzerne on April 23, 1955, a son of the late Donald Sr. and Romaine Tregan Houseknecht. Don was a graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School, Class of 1973, and York College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Don was a member of St. Nicholas Church in Wilkes-Barre. His strong faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother was truly an inspiration to all knew him. We will forever be amazed at his daily commitment to his rosary and nightly special prayer list.

Prior to his retirement, Don was employed as a Revenue Protection Specialist at PP&L. However, his most distinguished role was babysitter extraordinaire to his beloved grandchildren, Ethan and Delaney, the true loves of his life. His title of World’s Best “Ampa” was perfectly and rightfully earned as he ensured every day was more fun and special than the next for them. Whether it be Saturday morning bakery treats, way too many chocolate bars, McDonald’s and Handel’s Ice Cream dates, or park adventures, these two kids were blessed with the very best.

He is proceeded in death by in-laws Edward and Aldona DeMichele, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Don is survived by his college sweetheart Mary Jean DeMichele Houseknecht, who he recently celebrated forty years of marriage with; his children Jill McGlynn, and her husband Pat, Plains Township; and Donnie Houseknecht, New York City; grandchildren Ethan and Delaney McGlynn; brothers-in-law Jim DeMichele; and Ed DeMichele and wife Lisa; sister-in-law Melanie DeMichele; nieces, nephews, cousins, and of course his Grace Drive family.

“Big Don” will forever be remembered by his strong commitment to family, passion for helping others, sarcastic nature, huge heart, and amazing strength, among so much more. His final act of generosity to the Gift of Sight Program is the perfect testimonial to the honorable man he truly was.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, in St. Nicholas Church, 226 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, those attending the Mass are asked to go directly to the Church on Tuesday.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday in St. Nicholas Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center (CYC), 36 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
