Obituary of Peter Morika

Peter Morika, 91, of Wilkes-Barre Township, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024 in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Louis and Catherine Chisowski Morykon. Peter was a graduate of Coughlin High School. He was an Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed at HPG International in Mountain Top. Peter was earlier employed at the Central Slipper Company in Wilkes-Barre. Peter was a devoted member of SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, North River Street, Wilkes-Barre. He was a life member and former treasurer of the Ukrainian Literary Club in Wilkes-Barre. Peter loved animals and animals loved him. He especially loved his cat, Pam and his dog and companion, Teddy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Kuren Morika in 2021. Also preceding him in death were his sisters, Anna Morik, Helen Sluzar, Catherine Stchur, Rozelle Smith, Marion LaMooney and Nellie Kostelaba; brothers, Michael Morik, John Morriken and Joseph Morika. He is survived by his nieces and nephews, including Kathryn Smith, who was his caretaker. Divine Liturgy will be held on Friday, January 12th at 10:30 am in SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church 635 N. River Street, Wilkes-Barre. Rev. Myron Myronyuk will officiate. Those attending the service are asked to go directly to the church on Friday morning. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5-7 pm on Thursday at the Nat Gawlas Jordan Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter’s memory to SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, 635 N. River Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
