Obituary of William A. McGlynn

William A. McGlynn, 82, (Ret. Major Pennsylvania State Police) passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, in the Gardens for Memory Care at Easton. He was born in the East End Section of Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late James and Gertrude Metzger McGlynn. Bill was a graduate of Coughlin High School and King’s College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in public administration and Sociology. He was also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Quantico, VA. Bill proudly served as a Marine Corps veteran. Following his military service, he enlisted in the State Police in 1964. After graduating from the from the academy in Hershey, he was assigned to Troop A, Greensburg. As he progressed through the enlisted ranks he served in Bethlehem, Dunmore and Montoursville. He was promoted to corporal in 1971, sergeant in 1974 and he was commissioned a lieutenant in 1976. As a lieutenant, he was assigned to Troop F, Montoursville, as director of the criminal investigation section. In 1980 he transferred to Troop P, Wyoming, where he also served as crime section commander. In June 1986, he was promoted to captain and assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, department headquarters in Harrisburg. In January of 1987 he was assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Harrisburg. Later he was named Commanding Office of Troop R, Dunmore. He was then promoted to Major and assigned as Commander of Area VI, which comprises of Troop M, Bethlehem; Troop K, Philadelphia; and Troop J, Lancaster. He as preceded in death by his former wife, Marie Karen Dempsy McGlynn in 2016 and by his daughter, Shannon McGlynn in 2000 and by his sister, Maureen McGlynn. Bill is survived by his son, Patrick McGlynn, Boston, MA; brother, James McGlynn and sister, Barbara Curtis, both of VA; also surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 1 pm in Mary Mother of God Mausoleum at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1594 S. Main Street, Hanover Township. Rev. James J. Alco will officiate.
