Obituary of George Hargraves

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On Saturday, March 26, 2022, George Henry Hargraves (Shavertown) fell asleep in death after a long and fulfilling 87 years of life. George was born on February 6, 1935 to Franklin and Martha Jane (Lingertot) Hargraves. He was raised in Hanover Township, and graduated from Hanover High School in 1952. In the early years, George worked at Robbins Door and Sash Company in Wilkes-Barre, but his employment there was interrupted when, in 1957, he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Orleans, France. George returned in 1959 and quickly proposed to his sweetheart, Eleanor Zatzek. The couple married in May of 1960. The happiest years of his life were spent with his wife of 60 years, Eleanor Hargraves. Together, they visited many beautiful places and created lasting memories in the sun. They especially enjoyed cruises and went on many over the years together. George and Eleanor raised three beautiful daughters, Joelle, Michelle and Danielle in Shavertown. The family loved fishing and family trips to Harvey’s Lake. Later in life, George was employed by Saturn in Hanover where he worked until he retired. George was a very successful car salesman and was recognized as the company’s top salesman many times. George and his wife were faithful members of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Wilkes-Barre. He enjoyed bass fishing, NASCAR, and was a dedicated Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State fan. He never missed a game. George’s family will always smile when they remember hearing one of his many witty truisms. George was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eleanor, his brother Franklin “Bud” Hargraves, sisters Elizabeth Pierson and Dorothy Harrington, and great-grandson, Ian Sargent. He is survived by his daughters, Joelle (Richard) Hargraves, Sea Isle, New Jersey, Michelle (David) Gostinski, Mansfield, Pennsylvania and Danielle (Stanley) Wielgopolski, White Haven, Pennsylvania. George’s four grandchildren, Heather (Steven) Sargent, Deanna (Joe) Newman, Hannah and Luke Wielgopolski, and his great grandchildren, Noah and Naomi Sargent, will miss their grandfather very much. The family will hold a viewing on Tuesday, March 29th from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Edwards & Russin Funeral and Cremation Services in Edwardsville. There will also be a memorial service on March 30th at 10:00 AM given by a local congregation elder, Brian Heidig, at Edwards & Russin. A Zoom meeting link will be provided. A private burial will follow at Fern Knoll Cemetery, Dallas, PA.
